Billygoat weed (Ageratum conyzoides) is one of the many wild and popular medicinal plants that are widely used and it grows throughout our country. After learning the antibacterial properties of this plant, a group of students from Nguyen Tri Phuong Secondary School researched and prepared a product to support the treatment of lice and sinusitis.
According to indigenous knowledge and Vietnamese traditional medicine, Billygoat weed is widely used in the treatment of allergic sinusitis, boils, eczema, and hair problems or boiled with water to treat scabies and impetigo in children. And on that basis, Ho Bao Ngoc and Vo Hoang Quang, two students of Nguyen Tri Phuong Secondary School, inherited and prepared a product from Billygoat weed, which is supposed to inhibit some bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, E.coli, and Staphylococcus aureus; Anti-inflammation, anti-edema, anti-allergy; dilute sputum and improve wheezing, nasal congestion, etc.
Two students are conducting research
The group did a successful study and its outcome was a significant turning point that helped to clarify the usage of the plant toward the manufacture of products for treating lice and dandruff in the form of shampoo and nasal spray.
The group continued to produce nasal sprays, and shampoo to treat head lice, and dandruff, and strengthen hair. The products were tested at Quatest 2 Da Nang to ensure that the items meet the requirements established by the Ministry of Health according to TCVN-6972-2001 for shampoo
After a process of research and testing, the project team has developed KenKa shampoo products (treating head lice, and dandruff, and helping to strengthen hair) and nasal spray to help treat sinusitis with high efficiency. Due to the availability of cheap and plentiful raw materials and the ease of the production process, the products have affordable pricing that is ideal for a wide range of customers. It can be developed on a larger scale to create jobs, increase incomes, and improve the living standard of people.
KenKa products
Currently, the customers have used Kenka items made from Billygoat weed and given them favorable feedback. At the same time, the logos and product labels have been gradually improved.
With this research result, the two students were awarded the Second Prize at the 16th Thua Thien Hue Province’s Creativity Contest for Youth and Children, 2023 with the topic “A synthetic study – an assessment on the spray products made from Ageratum conyzoides (Billygoat weed) in preventing lice and sinusitis”.
