The contest 2019 – Third Prize: Bio-bags made from vegetable powder

With the idea of ​​creating a plastic bag to protect human health and the environment, Le Bui Huong Nhu and Nguyen Cao Hoai Thanh – students of Tam Giang High School, Phong Dien district, Thua Thien Hue province have studied and fabricated successfully bio-bags made from vegetable powder – an friendly environmental material that can replace plastic bags, contributing to raising community awareness in restricting the use of plastic bags.

Bags are used for storing and preserving fruit.

This self-destruct bag is made up of two main ingredients, Agar gelatin and vegetable jelly powder, which are cheap, easy to find in local area.

6 simple steps to self-made this bag:

Step 1: Add 400 ml of water to a pot with 5 grams of vegetable powder, 10 grams of gelatin powder and mix well.

Step 2: Catch the mixture on the kitchen and stir well.

Step 3: Once the mixture has boiled, continue stirring for another 2 minutes and then turn off the heat.

Step 4: Wait when the mixture has cooled down to about 500oC then sweep the mixture on the surface of the mold making object.

Step 5: After 24 hours the mixture is dry, remove the Agar water paste 2 layers like that together. Allow to dry for about 120 minutes and then cut into shape.

Self-destruct bags are convenient and effective in low temperature conditions when storing food in the refrigerator, as well as in normal temperature conditions. When using bags to pack food for storage in cool compartments, freeze in a week for good results. In addition, this type of bag when not used for food preparation can be used to make glue and easily decompose in the environment without causing harm.

Creativity : Based on dry agglomeration of Agar, it will create a transparent, mechanically stable film that can be stored for a long time without being damaged. Gelatin is an additive that can be tough, soft and completely non-toxic.Agar when heated is dissolved in the form of mucus, solidifies into blocks when cooled. When dissolved in cold water, agar will have a coagulant properties when drying will stick.

Applicability : The product can accommodate foods like other bags. Research has undergone an experimental process, the bag can be widely used in different environmental conditions.
