Plastic waste is currently a big challenge for the world, including Vietnam.

Through researching, we have realized that areca sheaths can be used for producingalternative products to replacesingle-use plastic dishes. Besides, to improve the durability of finished areca sheath products, our team conducted the research on “The process of producing dishes from areca sheaths to replace single-use plastics”, aiming toturn dry areca sheath into household products such as non-toxic and environment-friendly dishes.

Innovative features

+ Firstly, the topic has replaced hydraulic presses with areca sheath dish presses with efficiency equivalent to 60-70% of hydraulic presses, but the price is much lower.

+ Secondly, the topic has replaced ultraviolet germicidal irradiation withthe soaking of areca sheathsin 15% H2O2solution, which has similar sterilization and whitening effectand is safefor users (based on the test results of safety criteria of arecasheath dish). The cost of treatment and sterilization by soaking method in 15% hydrogen peroxide solution is also much cheaper than the ultraviolet germicidal irradiation.

– Dishes made from areca sheaths can replace single-use plastics. They can be used as drinkware andfood containers that ensure the criteria of durability, beauty, cheapness and safetyfor consumers. In particular, Aflatoxin (a mycotoxin, a carcinogen) is not found in areca sheath dishes.(Test result of areca sheath dishes).
